Overview
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) and Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) are part of the government-regulated system of work-related qualifications in the UK. They can be undertaken by anyone, regardless of age, whether they are a full or part-time employee, or a student on a work placement.
These qualifications are underpinned by the National Occupational Standards (NOS):
Format
There is no written test or examination with an occupational standard or vocational qualification. The qualification is achieved through an assessment of the individual’s ability to do his or her job to the required standard. The candidate is required to present evidence of competence taken from their everyday job. The assessment is carried out by a qualified assessor who is experienced in the same area of work.
What they can be used for
NVQs / SVQs can be used as a stand-alone qualification, or as one of the mandatory outcomes within an apprenticeship framework. They can also provide an alternative vocational route to higher education. Graded from level 1 (lowest) to level 5 (highest), a level 3 NVQ is recognised as the equivalent of an A-level and can be used to apply for a higher education course, while a level 4 NVQ is an intermediate qualification between further and higher education/advanced training.
We don't award NVQs or SVQs. This is done by the accredited awarding bodies.
