Steve Hughes is Group CEO of Coventry Building Society and The Co-operative Bank, leading a purpose-driven £90bn financial services group serving 4 million customers. Since joining Coventry in 2020, he’s transformed it into the UK’s second-largest building society and spearheaded the landmark acquisition of The Co-operative Bank in 2025.
With over 15 years at board level – including CEO of Principality Building Society and Finance Director at Lloyds – Steve brings deep expertise in finance, strategy and transformation. He’s a passionate champion of mutuality and responsible banking, known for putting members first.
Steve also helps shape the sector through roles with the BSA Council, Money and Pensions Service, Pennies Foundation, and as a member of the FCA Practitioner Panel.
